Bakteriopolis - The hidden world of microbes

Exhibition
TU Dresden

The science communication project Bakteriopolis offers a unique insight into the fascinating world of microbes. These tiny, invisible organisms play a central role in the life cycle and the development of our planet. They are essential for the emergence of higher life forms and can be found almost everywhere on Earth – whether in the deep sea, in hot springs, or even in your cheese. Bacteria influence global biogeochemical cycles and are of crucial importance in areas such as food production, medicine, and waste management.

One research focus in microbiology at TU Dresden is on bacterial multicellularity. This enables bacteria to better adapt to different environmental conditions, thus increasing their chances of survival. Visitors can learn more about how bacteria work together, communicate, and live in "bacterial cities" – colonies. Different bacteria can be observed under the microscope, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the world of the microcosm. Everyday examples, such as foods like water kefir, cheese, or the applications of cyanobacteria (e.g., Spirulina), will also be presented. An augmented reality app, developed in collaboration with the Chair of Multimedia Technology (Interactive Media Lab Dresden), allows visitors to explore the internal structures of a bacterial cell.

Curious? Take part in our quiz and answer exciting questions about the world of bacteria! Create your own bacterium or draw Bifido, Streptococcus, and their friends! Various experiments await you – so come by and dive into the fascinating world of microbes!
