Body, Weight, and Social Norms
Three Perspectives on Obesity
Three short keynotes, each followed by a discussion
Obesity is more than just a number on the scale!
Why does obesity develop – and why is it insufficient to focus solely on body weight? Three short presentations explore this complex topic from different perspectives.
From a medical perspective, the focus is on gender-specific differences, the role of various organs, and the gut microbiome. How can we better understand the diversity of this disease and, as a result, treat it in a more personalized way?
Societally, fat-shaming and weight stigma are at the center of attention. What consequences do shame and prejudice have for those affected, their health, and their participation in society? And how can respectful interaction be accomplished?
From a psychological perspective, the question arises as to how experiences, emotions, and habits shape preferences for certain foods, and what can help change eating habits and behaviors in the long term.
A multifaceted look at a condition that can only be understood by considering the whole individual.
