One in ten people hear voices. In this film, we meet five people who live with this phenomenon. One person hears one voice, another hears nineteen. One voice wants to protect, the other wants to harm. The main characters are in a therapeutic setting, where a psychiatrist – off-screen for us – leads a conversation about, but also with, their voices. Who are they? Why are they so hostile? What do they actually want? This revolutionary new approach opens doors for the patients to greater insight and acceptance of what is going on in their heads.

Not that the voices reveal themselves easily, because there is something at stake. In various sessions, trauma comes to the surface that is directly linked to the emergence of the voices. Yet unravelling a hidden past is not the focus of My Word Against Mine. The film mainly sketches a fascinating group portrait – of the main characters and their voices – that reflects the wonderful world of the human mind.
