Escape Game

Rita is dead. What remains are cassette tapes, letters, postcards, and the traces of five lives that underwent fundamental changes in the 1990s. Through fictional biographies, the story takes us back to a time when so much was possible and so little was certain.

The Futurecenter for German Unity and European Transformation in Halle (Saale) is emerging as a place where scholarship, culture, and community come together. The focus is on how the major upheavals since 1989/1990 in East Germany and Eastern Europe have shaped our lives—and what we can learn from these experiences for the future.

“Rita Is Dead—An Escape Game About the 1990s” brings these questions to life through play. Players immerse themselves in five fictional biographies, follow clues, listen to cassette tapes, sort through memories, and solve puzzles. This paints a picture of that era: loss, new beginnings, feeling overwhelmed, new opportunities—experiences that continue to resonate to this day. What is it like when everything suddenly shifts? When familiar certainties disappear and new possibilities emerge? When nothing is clear anymore and you have to rearrange your own life?
