Werkleitz/Afa* presents the video installation »Solid Waves« by Florian Fischer and Johannes Krell.
The video installation links three geological and cultural formations to tell a story about material cycles and time: Lake Störmthal, the Wimmelburg fumaroles and fossils from shell limestone. In Lake Störmthal, a flooded open-cast mining pit, white turbidity is created by controlled liming: calcium carbonate is added to stabilise the water's quality and pH value. Viewed from above, these artificial limestone clouds resemble an echo of ancient rock formations. The Wimmelburg vents demonstrate how water shapes the landscape underground.
Over thousands of years, it washed through the Zechstein deposits, forming valleys above ground and extensive cavities underground. The dance hall, a monumental chamber, connects these geological processes with human use. Images of shell limestone fossils hint at a shallow sea from 240 million years ago. These images transform fossilised life into topographies and reliefs, offering a visual representation of geological memory. Three forms of limestone are thus brought together: the calcium carbonate introduced to the lake artificially, the sinkholes hollowed out by water, and the fossils bearing witness to a bygone era. Limestone appears not only as a material, but also as a medium: it carries memory, marks breaks and reveals traces that are inscribed in our present.
* Die Agentur für Aufbruch (AfA) is a collaborative project between the Instituts für Strukturwandel und Nachhaltigkeit (HALIS) at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg and Werkleitz. The vernissage of the »Solid Waves« is part of the annual theme of year "Water and soil".
